Best Family Venue
Havering Museum
Sponsored by the Romford Recorder, and presented by Editor Mark Sweetingham
The Museum opened in May 2010 with the aim of making local history interesting, accessible and entertaining for the entire family. They must have succeeded, because sponsor the Romford Recorder organised an online public vote for this category, and Havering Museum stormed to the top, taking well over half the votes cast. Business Development Officer Stephen Keogh says, “The museum engages and entertains all ages. We’re visited by generations of families, and known for our treasure troves of Havering from past, present and future. One young visitor said it all: ‘Havering Museum is cool, ten out of ten’.”
Best Pub
The Harrow
Sponsored by Havering Chamber of Commerce and Industry and presented by HCCI Chairman Alex Armstrong
The judges in the best pub category loved the “passion and drive” of landlady Sarah Jeffries and the fact that her pub is not only seen as part of the community, but is also actively involved in raising awareness of underage drinking. Sarah says, “We’re honoured. We’re always keen to help our local community. Last year, we raised £2,500 for Help for Heroes, and over £1,000 for Barnardo’s this year with our 60s fancy dress night. We’d all like to say a special thank you to our guests for supporting us.”
Best Restaurant
Bekash Tandoori
Presented by Moinul Hussain, Advertising Editor, Spice Times
Solly Ahmed has been in the Indian restaurant business for 19 years, welcoming customers from far and near to try what the judges described as a “superb selection of food”. They were also impressed with Bekash’s relationship with the community and the charity work the team does. Solly says, “For us, there is no hospitality like understanding, and we have a close relationship with our customers. We do everything we can to stand out and encourage them to come back again and again. This would never have been possible without them.”

LOCAL SOLICITORS NAMED HAVERING BUSINESS OF THE YEAR
Pinney Talfourd LLP Solicitors has been named Havering Business of the Year 2011, singled out by the judges for “doing amazingly well in a difficult market and fantastic attention to detail”. They were one of 12 winners at a glittering awards ceremony last Friday (7th October) at Maylands Golf Club hosted by impressionist and comic Jon Culshaw.
Philip Cockram, Managing Partner at Pinney Talfourd said, “The key to our success is the quality and commitment of our staff, so this is an honour for the whole team. We’re proud of our focus on serving clients, and we think that’s what’s made us one of the largest and best legal practices in Essex.”
Cllr Robert Benham, Community Empowerment, London Borough of Havering, says, “All the Business of the Year finalists were excellent, but Pinney Talfourd showed impressive growth in a challenging economy. They also think about the future and how the company will develop, setting targets and measuring their achievements.”
Martin Bumpus, Senior Manager Comercial from Lloyds TSB Commercial, who sponsored the Business of the Year award says, “For any company to expand in the last few years is impressive, but Pinney Talfourd have gone from having two partners and 10 lawyers five years ago to having 10 partners and 30 lawyers today – and 30 support staff. Results like that make you stand out!
